Ripping Off the Packaging Tape

I’ve been planning to start a blog to journal my struggles and successes as a novice writer for at least six months, yet every time I think about blogging, I cringe. It’s not the idea of writing a blog on a schedule that makes my chest suddenly feel heavy. It’s the idea of committing myself to one more thing, as if I don’t have plenty of other things to do.

What I finally realized is that I need an outlet to share what I’m doing and thinking with regard to my writing life to make the process a bit less lonely. Perhaps no one will ever read my blog, but I think there is much to glean from reflecting on my own writing and sharing useful tips, insights, and lessons learned.

This week I came up with a title for my blog, which I consider a right out breakthrough. Somehow having an official blog name that wasn’t intrinsically egocentric provided me with an angle with which to focus my entries.

“Write Out of the Box” operates as a demand for myself. I must get beyond my own fears and preconceived notions to create work that inspires. I must adopt a way of thinking that leaves cliched ideas and word arrangements behind and produces art. I must try new things and open my mind.

As such, my plan is to use this blog to chronicle the ways in which I progress from cliched novice to word artist.
